Stewart scores FA Cup goal but team loses
LONDON, England (CMC) — Jamaican defender Damion Stewart hit a late goal for Queens Park Rangers (QPR) Tuesday evening, but the London club plunged to a 2-3 loss to Sheffield United and exited the FA Cup.
Sheffield United led the third-round fixture 3-0 midway the second half at QPR’s Loftus Road Stadium and held off a late rally from the home side to book a fourth-round spot.
Stewart netted the game’s last goal two minutes from the end.
United were in front 1-0 at the break through Lee Williamson, who hit a low shot past QPR’s goalkeeper in the 19th minute.
A quick two-goal burst midway the second half through substitute Jamie Ward (68th) and Richard Cresswell (70th) tightened the visitors’ grip on the game.
QPR began their comeback in the 71st minute when Akos Buzsacky pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after a Derek Geary hand-ball.
Stewart struck with a header in the 88th minute, connecting on a Buzsacky free-kick and QPR went close to forcing extra-time when United goalkeeper Mark Bunn saved Antonio German’s shot from six yards to deny QPR an equaliser.
