WPYC battle Paul Island in mid-season final
LITTLE LONDON, Westmoreland – Westmoreland Police Youth Club (WPYC) and Paul Island FC will continue their battle for the mid-season final spot from Zone B of the Westmoreland Football Association’s Captain’s Bakery Major League this afternoon with games against Chantilly Gardens and Western Sports Academy respectively.
WPYC and Paul Island, the second end-of-round champions last season, are both on seven points from three games each after drawing 1-1 against each other on Monday and will have a game in hand after this afternoon’s fixtures.
WPYC has a marginal edge on goal difference ahead of Paul Island and will take on last- placed Chantilly Gardens at the Bay Road Sports Complex.
Chantilly has won just one of the three games played so far but with a game in hand could finish near the top of the group at the end of the round with a win today.
Paul Island is facing third-placed Western Sports Academy who are coming off their first win 1-0 over Chantilly Gardens on Monday and will be eager to extend their winning run.
In one other game set for today, Savannah and Negril, both on four points from four games, will end their first round fixtures when they meet at Frome.
In games played Monday, Russia completed their first round schedule by drawing 1-1 with Central Westmoreland Athletics Club (CWAC) at Frome.
Omar Ledgister’s 43rd minute penalty conversion had given Russia the lead but Ron Daley scored for CWAC in then 73rd minute to share the points.
WPYC and Paul Island are locked in a tight race for the lead in Zone A on seven points each after playing to a 1-1 draw.
It was the first points that either team was dropping this season as they went in to the game with two wins from two games.
Sassamarley Barrett scored his third goal of the season to give WPYC the lead in the 39th minute but Ronaldo Chambers responded for Paul Island in the 70th minute.
At Petersfield, Alton Green’s lone goal, scored from the penalty spot in the 66th minute was enough to give Western Sports Academy their first win of the campaign, edging Chantilly Gardens 1-0.
