Williams on NCAA pre-season watch list
JAMAICA’s Kimberly Williams, a junior at Florida State University, has been named to the 2010 Bowerman Women’s Offical Pre-season Watch List.
The US Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) made the announcement yesterday (Thursday) in New Orleans.
The 21-year-old Williams was of one of 10 female collegiate track and field athletes named on the watch list, awarded to the top male and female collegiate athlete in the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Track and Field.
In its profile on the triple jump specialist, who also does the long jump, the USTFCCCA said that Williams, a Vere Technical past student, “was crowned three times in 2009 as an NCAA champion as the Seminole swept triple jump indoor and outdoor titles and added an outdoor long jump crown.
“In addition, Williams became just the second woman to have swept both long jump and triple jump titles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Williams also won three ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) Championships in 2009 to add to the three she won as a freshman in 2008.
“Williams notched her long jump career best of 21ft 10 inches (6.66m) at the NCAA East Regional in 2009 and her all-conditions triple jump best of 47ft 2 inches (14.38m) came on her final attempt of the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships, carrying only a 2.1 m/s wind-aided advantage,” noted the USTFCCCA.
Bronze medallist at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Senior Championships in Havana, Cuba last year and second at the National Championships, Williams is expected to open her season this weekend at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg.
