Jungle 12, Strikers claim INSPORTS titles
JUNGLE Twelve and Caribbean Strikers captured the respective St Andrew and Kingston titles in the finals of the INSPORTS/All-Island Community Football League at Barbican last Sunday.
The winners are expected to join other parish champions in the National 16, which is the second stage of the competition where only the parish winners advance.
Meanwhile Jungle Twelve, through goals from two substitutes, Sanjay Murdock and Dennis Levy in the 65th and 89th minutes, strolled to a 2-0 win over Franklyn Town.
Caribbean Strikers, through second-half goals from Patrick Hall, also won 2-0 over Romantic United.
Franklyn Town and Romantic will meet in a play-off to determine which other team from the region will join the last 16 in the next round on Sunday at Barbican, starting at 3:00 pm.
In the battle of St Andrew, both Jungle Twelve and Franklyn Town had difficulty controlling the ball as a result of strong winds.
Franklyn Town should have taken the lead as they counter-attacked nicely on the left flank, but the chance was squandered due to a poorly directed kick that sliced off the player’s boot past the upright as the half ended goalless.
Murdock placed a kick to the far corner past goalkeeper Cunningham to take a 1-0 lead in the 65th minute, and eventually clinched the match when a shot from Dennis Levy rebounded off Nicholas Francis and eluded goalkeeper Cunningham.
In the Kingston final, Caribbean Strikers and Romantic United Youth Club were evenly contested in the first half, with the latter having a slight advantage by producing more attacking build-ups.
