Reno go top after slamming Catherine Hall
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Reno took over the lead in the Captain’s Bakery Western Confederation Super League on Thursday after beating Catherine Hall 3-0 in their rescheduled first-round game played at the UDC field in Montego Bay.
The Westmoreland club scored three times in the final 24 minutes, as Catherine Hall put up a good challenge but were let down by the strikers who missed a handful of chances, especially in the second half when the pace of the game stepped up as both teams went in search of goals.
Martin Williams in the 66th minute, Patrick Graham in the 88th and Trimaine Perry in time added on were the scorers for Reno, who joined Seba on 26 points, but with a superior goal difference with a game left to be played.
The margin could have been wider if Reno’s goalkeeper Dennis Taylor, who was celebrating his birthday, had not missed a penalty in the 85th minute, kicking the ball onto the underside of the cross bar.
Both teams came out attacking in the second half and no fewer than four clear-cut chances were created between both teams in the first three minutes of the resumption.
The large turnout had to wait until the 66th minute, however, when former national player Obrien Woodbine engineered the first goal. Shaking off a tackle in his own half, Woodbine dribbled down the left side before passing the ball inside to Perry, who then found Williams inside the 18-yard box and he fired it past the Catherine Hall goalkeeper.
Two minutes after Taylor missed the sport kick, Graham doubled the score when he dribbled through the Catherine Hall defence and calmly slotted the ball home.
Perry capitalised on a demoralised defence in time added on when he punched the ball home from close range to complete the scoring.
