BT condemn Village to 9th loss
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Boys’ Town made a winning start to the third round of the Digicel Premier League (DPL) beating last-placed Village United 3-1 at Jarrett Park on Sunday, the largest margin of victory on the day.
After leading 1-0 at half-time thanks to Andre Wheeler’s 19th-minute goal, Boys’ Town put the game out of reach of Village United with goals from George Vernal in the 76th and substitute Shane Edwards two minutes later.
St James High schoolboy Allan Ottey scored his first DPL goal when he pulled one back for Village in the 86th minute, but it was the Trelawny-based team’s ninth loss from 23 games so far this season.
The win left Boys’ Town in fourth place on 38 points, one more than St Georges United and two behind third-placed Waterhouse.
The result was a welcomed one for Boys’ Town’s coach Andrew Price. “It has been a while we have scored three goals so this is a good result for us.”
Up by one goal at half-time, he did not allow his team to relax as they “expected Village to come back at us, but the two quick goals gave us some comfort”. He added that giving up the late goal came as a result of his team relaxing too much.
Village United were the team off to the better start as they pushed Boys’ Town back in to their own defensive area with first-time national invitee Ricardo Morris dominating
the midfield.
A corner from Troy Smith flashed across the face of the Boys’ Town goal in the fifth minute, while Morris’ shot on the turn a minute later was saved by goalkeeper Kirk Porter.
Lance Laing’s header in the 13th minute was just wide of the Boys’ Town goal, but two minutes later Boys’ Town had their first chance but Vernal, with goalkeeper Kemar Llewellyn at his mercy, shot straight at the custodian.
Boys’ Town took the lead against the run of play as Wheeler shot home to Llewellyn’s right-side cross in the 19th minute from close range.
The victors should have widened their lead a minute into the second half, but Peter Keys was a step too late to get to a pass from the left that beat the Village United defence.
Michael Campbell had two good chances but headed wide of the right post in the 70th minute and then saw Llewellyn block his shot from two yards in the 72nd.
Ottey, who came on in the 56th minute, pulled one back for Village in the 86th when he beat Porter from about 20 yards with a left-foot strike.
