August Town stun Arnett 3-0 in KO
APHAS Bernard netted a brace for August Town to slam Arnett Gardens 3-0 in their Jackie Bell quarter-final match at the UWI Bowl yesterday.
August Town will now meet Boys’ Town in the semi-finals after the latter thumped Greenwich Town FC 11-0 to complete a 13-2 aggregate score.
Kemar Cockburn netted in the 41st minute and Bernard added his pair in the 50th and 79th for August Town to show that their 4-2 victory against the ‘Junglists’ last month was no fluke.
Riding on a wave of victories in the Digicel Premier League, the August Town players seemed to be getting complacent and some turned up late for the match, which irked coach Paul Young.
“I had to shout at them,” said Young, who has been an inspiration and role model to the players.
But Arnett, donned in their red and black which once drove fear in many a team, was never in it and appeared to be just honouring their fixture.
Their coach Wayne Fairclough laid down the rules after the match during a short meeting, noting that he would be ringing in the changes and stepping up their training.
“I want them to be martyrs for the team,” said Fairclough, priming his team for war in the remaining months of the Premier League.
“I am not going into any bush league and I am not going anywhere,” said Fairclough, trying to hold it together.
Meanwhile, Bernard spoke about his goals afterwards.
“They set the offside trap and I saw the break, ran through, got away and finished,” he said about the first goal.
“In the second goal I realised that the shot was going to rebound, so I followed up. Coach always says ‘follow up the shots’, and I finished,” added a confident Bernard, who played for Greenwich Town, Norman Manley, Meadhaven United, Arnett Gardens, and is in his third stint with August Town.
In the Boys’ Town vs Greenwich Town FC encounter, Peter Keyes netted a hat-trick (43rd, 44th and 53rd minutes) to lead his team to victory. George Vernal (30th, 75th) and Renae Lloyd (58th, 71st) hits doubles, while Michael Campbell (12th), Jamiel Hardware (79th), Robert Scott (80th) and Romando Johnson (90th) completed the scoring.
The competition continues today with two other games. Waterhouse host Cavalier at Drewsland at 6:00 pm, while Harbour View, trailing 0-2 from the first leg, entertain Tivoli Gardens at the mini stadium an hour later.
