What can I do about my dry hair?

“WOW, you know seh yuh hair no bad, but why yuh head affi suh dry?”

This is a question that almost everyone has either asked or heard being asked. In a climate such as Jamaica’s, hair without proper treatment will most likely become dry and ultimately start breaking.

Dry hair really develops from over exposure to the different elements of weather, like sunshine, rain, wind. Also for those who just love checking out Jamaica’s beaches, that salty seawater can really do a number on your hair.

Dry hair is very fragile and breaks easily and when specially when wet it can stretch nearly double its length, which can be very damaging. If you have dry hair try to brush it as little as possible when wet. An oil treatment is recommended as this will help give the hair the natural oils that have been strip out of it and give thickness and shine.

So here are a few things that you can do to keep your hair shiny, beautiful and on your head.

It’s recommended that you:

* Use a mild shampoo containing fatty acids, protein, balsams, and moisturisers.

* Use only the amount recommended and do not repeat, this will remove too much natural oils from the hair.

* Milk and egg yolks have been used for many years to condition hair and add protein.

* Use conditioners that contain confrey, this herb contains lots of protein.

* Make a home-made hair mask by mixing five tablespoons of olive oil with two eggs. Apply mixture to the hair, wrap the hair in a plastic wrap or a shower cap. Allow it to stand for 15 minutes before thoroughly rinsing it out. Hair masks are often the best things for dry, damaged hair as they help to lock in moisture to the hair.
