Smith retains title in hotel squash tourney
NEGRIL, Westmoreland — National representative Steve Smith retained his Class A title at the second annual Couples Swept Away squash tournament held at the hotel in Negril last weekend.
It was no walk over for Smith who was pushed as he had to resort to his experience and guile to beat Stephen Dear 3-2 in the final.
Richard Deenah took third place after beating Patrice Monthrope 3-1 in the play-offs between the semi-final losers.
Negril Native Paul Dilworth cruised to a 3-1 win over Bruce Hart in the Class B final, using his speed and agility to get the better of his opponent.
Donovan Vassell won the Class C section beating Francis Williams 3-1 in what was a ding-dong battle early on before Vassell gradually eased ahead on his way to the win.
The winners were awarded trophies and complimentary weekends for two at the Couples Resort.
Meanwhile, Norman Samuels, sports manager for Couples Swept Away, was pleased with the weekend’s events and said he was hoping the event will grow and become a fixture in he future.
“We have two well-established tennis tournaments here at Couples Swept Away and our Easter Clay Court event is well established and we hope the squash tournament will grow to become as popular,” he said.
