Small field to contest Phillips Mem Cup
SMALL but competitive fields characterise the second midweek racecard of the year at Caymanas Park today with 10 events on offer. First post is 1:05 pm.
The sixth running of the $516,000 Howard Phillips Memorial Cup, a Restricted Allowance 1V sprint for native-bred four-year-olds and upward (NW3) over 1,100 metres, will highlight the programme.
A field of six two geldings and four fillies will go postward, with the Robert Beyers four-year-old grey filly, She’s Magic, looking primed for her third career win.
Prepared by champion and leading conditioner Wayne DaCosta, She’s Magic has performed well over the distance in the past with her best effort being a desperately close three-way photo finish in a $550,000 claiming race on New Year’s Day.
Never lighter than 49 kg in last 10 starts and coming into the event with only 46 kg for the services of the improving female claiming apprentice Georgina Sergeon, the stretch-running daughter of He’stherealthing out of Magic Butterfly is now expected to go all the way to the winner’s circle unencumbered.
Being a very competitive event Sergeon cannot afford to be complacent about the chances of the late running filly as the field of varied opponents such as Milestone, trained by Percival Hussey and ridden by another claiming apprentice, Jodeien Anderson, and coming in at the least 48.0kg, could prove their undoing.
Milestone beat a good field of rivals over the distance in a good time of 1:07.2 and returning this light, the dark bay four-year-old Vanadium filly out of Quiet Giant is expected to be competitive throughout. She has moved fluently at exercise and could dictate terms from in front where she could prove hard to overhaul in the drive for the wire.
Ascott Farms’ four-year-old bay filly, Patara, trained Anthony Nunes, is another who has possibilities of winning the event, despite the disadvantage at the weights coming in at 53.0kg for stable rider Shane Ellis.
The daughter of Pat N Jac, who is the full sister to Rampage, is certainly not of the same pedigree, but is a versatile sort who went close over the distance on last when finishing one length second to Big Man in a time of 1:07.4.
Patara returns in competitive shape and not badly off at the weights will be just off the leaders to be in the heat of battle after turning for home.
