Explosive Report lands Phillips Mem
SHANE Ellis rode two winners at Caymanas Park yesterday to move back to the top of the jockeys standing with 10 wins, while Explosive Report scored a mild upset in the day’s $516,600 Howard Phillips Memorial Cup feature by 1 1/4 lengths as a 11-1 betting option.
Also sharing the day’s honours with Ellis with two wins were fellow riders claiming apprentices Doushane Gordon and Richard Mairs, jockey Richard Mitchell and trainer Ryan Darby.
Ellis won aboard Girlofmydreams in the fifth race for Darby and Cio Moto in the eighth for trainer Anthony Nunes.
Mitchell had the leg up on Addi Addi for owner/trainer Lee Clarke in the sixth race and closed the programme on Diesel for Delroy Wisdom.
Gordon opened the programme with Royal Blast for Darby and scored with the 5-1 shot Train Tracker Boy in the seventh for trainer Robert Taylor.
Mairs, who won the day’s feature aboard Explosive Report for trainer Gary Subratie, was also aboard Brash & Sassy for trainer Peter-John Scully to have the leg up on the two most important races on the programme.
Explosive Report took advantage of a slowly into stride Milestone to relax on the lead but was soon overhauled by Milestone.
He tracked the leader for most of the way until turning for home on the outside where he threw down a serious challenge and motored into the lead close home to open his winning accout for the new season from three starts in the six-horse field for Restricted Allowance 1V native-bred four-year-olds and upward.
He ran 1,100 metres in 1:07.2 Milestone the 9-5 second favourite with Jodeien Anderson up finished second but was later disqualified and placed fifth for an infringement at the start while third past the post Confetti was promoted to second at odds of 9-1 ridden by Dick Cardenas.
She’s Magic, a 4-1 bet partnered by Georgina Sergeon, was promoted to third after finishing fourth while fifth past the post Patara the 3-5 favourite took fourth spot.
Explosive Report, owned by Houston Stables, is a four-year-old dark bay gelding by Deputy’s Report out of Explosive Witt (Schism) and bred by Marcus Dabdoub.
It was the gelding’s third win from 15 career starts and he earned $282,050 as the winner’s share for earnings of
$1,305,000 lifetime.
