Cassanova Boy cops King’s Plate event
THE impressive undefeated American imported colt, Cassanova Boy, won the $1,000,000 King’s Plate Open Allowance feature in Stakes record time at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Earlier, Simple Sweet, ridden by Jason Simpson, won the $492,000 Altamont V Armond Memorial Cup secondary feature on the nine-race card.
Trained by Welsh Soutar, Simple Sweet — a six-year-old chestnut mare — ran 2,000 metres in a labouring 2:17.2 for her two-length win in the six-horse field for the claiming spread $350,000 – $300,000 three-year-olds and upward.
In the day’s feature, Cassanova Boy, carrying 53.0kg and ridden by the champion jockey for champion trainer Wayne DaCosta, ran 1,500 metres in a time of 1:31.1 to erase the old mark of 1:3.2 set by the local-bred Regal Selection on February 14, 2009 at the same race track.
It was the fifth consecutive win for the grey colt from the same number of starts since opening his account on local soil in September last year with a three-length win over 1,100 metres.
Since then, he has gone on to win his other races in commanding fashion, and yesterday’s victory was in the same mode as he galloped to a 5 1/4-length win after track splits of 24.3, 47.4 set by stablemate Satan’s Rule for the first 800 metres.
Cassanova Boy, installed the 1-4 favourite, took complete control of the event leaving the 800-metres pole, tracked by Prince Of Peace ridden by Dick Cardenas and Hail The Genius partnered by Aaron Chatrie.
The grey American then brought the field into the lane some distance behind as he set down for the final 400-metre dash, with Prince Of Peace breathing down his back.
However, two quick tops with the whip from Walker inside the 150-metre poles brought new and surging speed from the captivating winner who galloped on to the winning post in a Stakes record time without being seriously challenged for a better effort.
Prince Of Peace, well supported at odds of 9-2, finished second. Hail The Genius, a 17-1 bet, held on for third another 4 1/4 lengths third, while New Kingston, who was never rally far away under overseas-based Kirk Johnson, closed mildly to complete the frame as a 10-1 bet.
Owned by Elizabeth DaCosta, Graeme Dulal-Whiteway, Winston Kong & Raymond Rousseau, Cassanova Boy by Narjan out of Gender Bias (Saratoga Six) was bred by Frank Penn and John R Penn in the USA.
He earned $429,150 as the winner’s share for earnings of $1,961,200 lifetime from his five career wins from as many starts.
