Humble Lion, Sporting in KO showdown
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Four-time champions Humble Lion will be going for a record fifth title in the Clarendon Football Association Knock-Out competition when they play fellow Digicel Premier League campaigners Sporting Central Academy in the final at Brancourt today, starting at 3:00 pm.
The game was originally set for December 31 at the Effortville Community Centre, but was postponed due to the inclement weather.
Today’s encounter is expected to be a grand affair, as it is the first time in many years two Premier League teams will be meeting in the KO decider.
The last time two Premier League teams met in the final was back in the mid-1990s when Hazard United (now Portmore) defeated Galaxy.
The only setback, though, is that both teams are already assured of a place in theJFF’s/Flow All-Island Knockout Championship by virtue of being DPL contenders. As such, they could well field under-strength teams, with their focus being the big league.
However, some amount of excitement is guaranteed, as this is may be their only realistic chance of winning a trophy this season, with the DPL title looking out of their reach.
Additionally, both teams will be playing only for bragging rights and the winner’s purse of $30,000, the KO trophy and medals. Second-placed medals will also be presented to the losers.
Humble Lion, who are the defending champions, will be hunting their third consecutive title at this level and fifth overall after victories in 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2008. Sporting, on the other hand, will be looking for their fourth title after winning three in a row (2004-2006).
And while it is expected to be a close encounter, Sporting should start as favourites.
In the DPL, Sporting are having a slightly better season than Humble Lion. They are in sixth place on 28 points — just three clear of the Lions, in eighth place.
Also, in their two meetings this season, Sporting won the first one 3-0, while other ended in a 0-0 tie.
