It’s Bill Pinkney’s Original Drifters for A Valentine Affair
Bill Pinkney’s Original Drifters will be holding centrestage at the Cable and Wireless Golf Academy on the biggest slated love day in the country, Valentine’s Day. The show, which is being dubbed A Valentine Affair will take place on Sunday, February 14th.
“We’ve performed all over the world as Bill Pinkney’s Original Drifters. Bill is dead, but the members, Chuck, Russell, Richard and Vernon continue Bill’s fine legacy with pride and respect,” Minyon Lewis, who handles bookings and management of the group, said in a release.
However, the Prism Music Group, which is the worldwide licensee of the Drifters trademark, would like to make it known that, “Bill Pinkney’s Original Drifters are not associated in any way with The Drifters.”
According to research on the Internet, Bill Pinkney, one of the original Drifters in those formative years, left the group to join with the Thrashers and David Baughan to begin touring as The Original Drifters. Several original Drifters came in and out of this group over time, as well as other new artists.
“We’re celebrating 57 years of excellence, and we have performed all over the world,” Ms Lewis said.
The show is being promoted by newcomers DMR Promotions.
“Anticipation is high for the event, it’s going to be a night for lovers, and who knows? We may have one or two marriage proposals that night,” a representative of DMR Promotions said.
The Drifters are the quintessential R & B vocal group and several of its members have been inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. The group, which was formed in 1953, has had a turbulent history with several different lead singers such as Ben E King and Johnny Moore, but remained remarkably consistent throughout the years. The Drifters are known for hits such as Honey Love, Magic Moment, Save the Last Dance for Me, There Goes My Baby, Under the Boardwalk and Up on the Roof. Bill Pinkney’s Original Drifters are expected to do renditions of some of these songs.
The Cool Ruler, Gregory Isaacs, Karen Smith, Nicky Dillon, Singa J, special guest Orville Burke, Leroy Sibbles, and Ernest Wilson will provide the Jamaican singing voices.
Showtime is 7:00 pm.
Part proceeds of the concert will go the Jamaica Cancer Society.
