August Town win again

Fabian Dawkins’ late strike snapped a two-match losing streak for August Town who defeated St Georges SC 2-1 in their Digicel Premier League match at the UWI Bowl yesterday.

Daniel Shaw put the home team ahead from the penalty spot after 12 minutes, but Delroy James levelled the score with a thunderous strike in the 74th before Dawkins struck five minutes from time.

The visitors started positively, but fell behind early in the contest when the ball was handled inside the area. After Shaw converted the resulting spot-kick, St Georges went on the hunt for the equaliser.

Denroy Dennis had the best chance to find an equaliser, but he lifted his effort over the crossbar from 12 yards from Ushane Dobson’s low cross.

Towards the end of the half, Girvon Brown was allowed to dribble through the August Town defence, but his final pass to Leon Irving was a little off, allowing goalkeeper Randal Huie to avert the danger.

August Town started the second-half more purposeful and came close in the opening minutes through substitute Teofore Bennett.

However, both teams had good share of the possession and looked threatening although the chances were few and far between.

The next best chance fell to Donovan Hibbert for the hosts some 25 minutes later, but his tame header was easily handled by Huie.

St Georges then scored a deserving equaliser with 15 minutes left to play. It followed a good build-up which saw James collecting the ball on top of the area before firing an unstoppable shot into the top corner of Devon Haughton’s goal.

Both teams then stepped up their play in search of the winner, but with the game heading for a draw, Shaw delivered a high ball into the area from a free-kick.

Kemar Cockburn outjumped the St Georges defence and headed down into the path of Dawkins who fired the ball over the advancing Huie for his second goal in two games.

Paul Young, the August Town coach, said his team got complacent after scoring and allowed their opponents back into the game.

“Overall I’m happy we won the game, but we need to kill off teams and put games away,” he insisted.

His counter-part, Braxton Hyre, blamed poor defending for his team’s defeat.

“We were even expecting to come out with at least a draw coming from one goal down, but we were faulty in the defensive area, which is unlike us, and that cost us the game,” he said.
