Calabar rebound to defeat Mannings in school basketball
CALABAR rebounded from the opening round lost to Belair in the ISSA/KFC National Schools basketball play-offs, beating Mannings 71-49 at the National Stadium Courts on Saturday.
Youth prodigy Vashil Fernandez with 21 points and 21 rebounds and Dwayne Pottinger with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 14 blocks led the way for the Corporate Area finalists.
Andre Davids had 14 points for the losers, Ruel Gordon 13 and Lenworth Pryce 10.
After a competitive first half which saw Mannings leading 29-27, Calabar rallied to take a 45-41 lead entering the final quarter, which they dominated to come away easy winners.
Earlier, Javed Habib top-scored with 21 points and eight rebounds. Rahseed Andrews supported with 18 points and 15 rebounds and Shavair Francis with 12 points, 10 assists and nine steals.
Jordon Lawson was Munro’s best player with eight points.
At Ocho Rios High, Edwin Allen defeated Old Harbour, 65-52, in the Senior League, thanks to 18 points from Delando Russell, 17 from Jason Bailey and 15 from Adrian Sutherland.
Old Harbour’s Roshane Ingram bagged a game-high 22 points and Dale Reynolds, 19.
In the Junior match-up, Old Harbour turned the tables to come away 68-46 winners against their opponents.
Bryan Mitchell posted 24 points for Old Harbour and Tafari Tugott 23 points for Edwin Allen.
At Church of the Nazarene, Ardenne High denied Belair their second consecutive win with a 47-40 result their opponents. Hopeton Bailey led the way with 11 points for Ardenne, while Mark Perry was Belair’s top-scorer with a game-high 16 points.
The competition continues today with Herbert Morrison against St George’s College in Senior action and Herbert Morrison versus Jamaica College in the Junior League at the Montego Bay Cricket Club.
At the National Stadium Courts, Hydel High face Old Harbour High and Ardenne take on Ocho Rios in Under-19 play.
Campion College will face Old Harbour and Ardenne meet York Castle in the Under-16 contest.
