Seaview claim Syd Bartlett title…
Members of the Seaview Gardens Football Club are fuming following their 2-1 victory over Meadforest in a rescheduled match at Queensborough on Tuesday to secure the Claro/KSAFA Syd Bartlett League title at Seaview.
Roland Young, with his ninth goal of the season, netted the first, before Theodore Malcolm gave Seaview a 2-0 lead. Richard Brown scored Meadforest’ consolation in the 64th minute.
Meanwhile Earl Pinto, the club’s president, said they were very disappointed and upset after no trophy or KSAFA represenative showed to herald their victory.
“The players feel upset because they said the most important thing was for the trophy to be there,” he told the Observer.
“When Cavaliers won (the Super League), the trophy was there and they made the presentation, but when we win no one was there, so everybody is upset because they see it as a big disrespect,” he stated.
He said after the game the team drove through the community celebrating their triumph, but not having the trophy placed a damper on the celebrations.
“We’re trying to help bring the peace and everybody together… but everybody was saying that something like this, the trophy or someone should be there at the time to recognise our success,” Pinto added.
However, despite the disappointment, Pinto says they take comfort in knowing they are champions.
“The important thing was to win the league and we created history, because it’s the first woman coach to win the championship.”
Former national women’s footballer Tamara Williams, in her first season at the club, described her experience as challenging, but hungers for more success as the team steps into a higher league.
“I’m looking forward to the new season and new challenges and hopefully,… lifting the cup at the end of the season as well,” she said.
Club executive osalee pringle also expressed her disappointment and anger at Tuesday’s episode.
“I was so upset… I would like to know what happened because normally when the league finishes you’re supposed to get your trophy and have your celebration.
“And for the team to be celebrating without a trophy, that cannot work, and it’s really upsetting,” she fumed.
Meanwhile KSAFA president Rudolph Speid said making a trophy presentation is a matter of choice and they wanted to have it on the final day of the competition.
“The season is not finished because there is a set of games coming on Sunday. But this is a matter of choice, because even in the Super League, the trophy was presented on the last day,” said Speid.
Seaview will be presented with the trophy in a ceremony at the Seaview playing field on Sunday.
