Mico clip GC Foster in Intercol TT
Mico Teachers College edged hosts GC Foster College 3-2 in a lone males match played Thursday, as the Inter-Collegiate Table Tennis competition continued.
After this result, former champions University of the West Indies (UWI) remained atop the points standings with 11 points. They are followed by another former champion, University of Technology (UTech) and GC Foster College on 10 points each, Mico seven points and Montego Bay Community College (MBCC) six points. The preliminary rounds fixtures are now 75 per cent complete and the top four finishers will contest the semi-finals.
In individual results on Thursday, Oneil White crushed Evon Morgan 11-5, 11-7, 11-2 (3-0) and Altamont Henry trounced Braxton Hyre 11-7, 11-7, 11-9 (3-0) in singles matches for Mico. These two Mico players then combined in doubles to overpower Raphael Howell and Orville Sancroft 11-1, 11-3, 11-1 (3-0), for Mico’s third victory.
Hyre eased past Obrien Henry (Altamont’s son) 14-12, 11-8, 11-6 (3-0) and Howell turned back Leighton Locke 11-2, 11-7, 7-11, 11-6 (3-1), for GC Foster’s two consolation triumphs.
Team semi-finals followed on the same day by the finals to be contested on Sunday, April 10 in the UTech Auditorium.
On this culminating day, individual events — men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles, will also be played.
ITTF Level II coaches Sandra Riettie and Colin McNeish coach UWI and UTech, respectively; Richard Davidson coaches GC Foster College; Glendon Powell coaches MBCC and player/coach Altamont Henry coaches his team mates.
The League continues next Thursday with UWI at home to MBCC in a men’s contest.
