Youthful Dewar snares 4 wickets as Ja restrict Ireland
West Indies youth player Akeem Dewar took four wickets on the second day of the Supreme Ventures Sports Betting (SVSB) Cricket Festival match as Ireland were restricted to 275 for nine by Jamaica at Chedwin Park.
Ireland were strolling along comfortably at 250 for five in the final session of the day when the legspinner, playing his debut first-class match, caught Alex Cusack off his own bowling to trigger a late order collapse that saw a total of four wickets falling for 19 runs.
After dismissing Jamaica on the stroke of close of play on Saturday for 339, the visitors started shakily yesterday as captain William Porterfield was sent back for one by pacer Andre Russell. His departure brought about the combination of fellow opener Paul Stirling and number three batsman Niall O’brien who shared in a second-wicket stand of 108.
Stirling was eventually run out for 65 from 112 balls when Russell deflected a straight drive in his follow-through unto the stumps at the non-striker’s end, while O’brien was dismissed by Dewar for 62 from 109 deliveries. It was then left to Cusack to guide the middle order with a solid 53 runs from 124 balls, including five fours and a straight six off Dewar, who finished with four for 81 off 23 overs.
The rest of the batting then failed to cope with the spin and bounce that the 18-year-old was able to get off the pitch as they struggled to close of play. Andre Russell was also influential in that final session and ended the day with three for 41 off 14 overs.
Play will resume at 10:00 am on today’s third and final day.
