Fluffy obliges in O’Sullivan Mem Cup
THE American-bred filly Fluffy moved away from the field in decisive fashion after turning for home to win the $715,000 Calvin O’Sullivan Memorial Cup feature by 8 3/4 length at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Trained by Wayne DaCosta for owners Elizabeth DaCosta & Edmund Thomas, Fluffy — ridden by Omar Walker — ran 1,820 metres in 1:56.4 in the 10-horse field for Open Allowance three-year-olds and upward to justify her 4-5 favouritism the nine-race programme.
Very pleasd with the filly’s performance, trainer DaCosta said: “She worked fairly well coming into the race and we were expecting a good performance but this one was above average. “We did expect her to run well as she stays, but the manner in which she set alight was something special,” he added.
A filly with good early pace, the race was run at a leisurely pace and Walker was asked what was his reason.
“It was a 1,820 metres race so there was no need to rush and the plan was to ride her in the last 400 metres,” he responded.
It was the second consecutive win and the fourth overall for the American import from five starts for the season and closed the three-time for Walker, who took the day’s riding honours by also booting home Lord Admiral in the first race for trainer Norman Palmer and Grace Marie in the fifth for trainer Ian Parsard, who is also a part owner.
Second past the post Go My Robin was much earlier in running on this occasion, but after the winner found an extra gear or two turning for home and motor away from the rest of the field, could only plod on to finish second with Georgina Sergeon in the saddle as a 5-2 betting option.
Prime Minister who took a back seat as Fluffy and Ivan The Terrible dictated the early fractions closed rapidly up the lane, but his effort was only for one of the minor shares as he finished third as a 5-1 bet under Dane Nelson.
Sulamani, the other three-year-old in the race, along with Fluffy, ran pretty well and closed the frame under the claiming apprentice Jevvanne Irwin at odds of 23-1.
Fluffy, a three-year-old dark bay, brown filly by Chelsey Cat out of Carol’s Littlebit (Above Nornal), was bred by Nancy C Shuford in the USA and was winning for the fourth time from six career starts. She earned $390,400 as the winner’s share to pocket $1,872,550 lifetime for owners.
