Jamaica record second win at Caribbean Under-16 tourney
DEFENDING Champions Jamaica registered their second win of the Caribbean Netball Association Jean Pierre Under-16 competition, beating Grenada in convincing fashion 40-13 at the Netball Stadium in Barbados yesterday.
The Jamaicans led 10-2 at the end of the first quarter, 19-6 at the half-way mark, and 31-10 at the end of the third quarter.
Despite the huge gap, however, coach Minneth Reynolds told the Observer that the scoreline did not reflect how difficult the game was.
“The girls had to work hard to win this game,” she said. “The score doesn’t give a true picture of the game,” she said.
Reynolds said the officiating standards also left a lot to be desired. “We had sort of expected it but it was terrible,” she said.
It was the third straight defeat for Grenada who were beaten 37-26 by St Vincent and the Grenadines in their second match, having lost to hosts Barbados in their opening encounter on Saturday.
The Jamaicans crushed Dominica 45-7 in their opening game on Sunday after receiving a first-round bye. The young Sunshine Girls raced to a 12-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. Pennant led with 18 from 25 attempts, while Sade Ffrench scored 11 from 12 attempts and Chiquana Reid chipped in with eight from 10.
All 11 teams in the competition will have a break today as the shooting competition takes place. Jamaica play their third game against Trinidad and Tobago tomorrow.
