J’can Hayles on target for Cheltenham
CHELTENHAM, England (CMC) — Former Reggae Boy Barry Hayles scored on Saturday to help fire Cheltenham Town to an emphatic 5-2 victory over Bury, their third win in as many game as the League Two side continued their march away from relegation.
Hayles, who celebrates his 38th birthday next Saturday, was on target in the 86th minute to put a cap on another fine outing by the south-west England side.
His goal helped to settle Cheltenham’s nerves after they watched their 3-0 lead disappear at home at Whaddon Road as Bury hauled themselves back into the contest at 3-2 after 82 minutes.
Josh Low made it 4-2 when he got on to the end of a long ball in the 84th minute, worked his way through the Bury defence before rounding goalkeeper Wayne Brown and slotting home.
Minutes later, Low was in action again when he again breached the Bury defence and laid off for Hayles who made no mistake from close range for his seventh goal of the season.
Earlier, Justin Richards had put the Robbins ahead with a 37th minute penalty with Matt Thornhill adding a second in the first minute of half time and Low scoring his first in the 52nd to extend the lead.
With the game seemingly heading for a predictable finish, Ryan Lowe scored twice in three minutes to set up a tense last eight minutes of regular time.
Cheltenham are on 44 points, seven points clear of the drop zone with three games remaining in the season.
