Schoolfield yet to win as Corby surge in Malvern league
Malvern, St Elizabeth — Schoolfield’s search for their first victory of this year’s Malvern League proved futile as they went down 1-3 to Champion All Stars in their recent encounter at the Bethlehem College playing field.
It took 43 minutes for the opening goal from Champion’s Chris Dyer. Seven minutes later Shane Simpson doubled the lead for his team. Schoolfield’s consolation came in the 70th minute from Aaron Wright, but Champion regained their two-goal advantage when Simpson got his second in the 78th min.
Champion’s coach Devon Shaw claimed his team “played well. I’m happy for the victory,” he said, while a disappointed Gregory Clacken of Schoolfield lamented: “We can’t score.”
In other games, Corby secured sole leadership of the league with a 1-0 win over previous joint leaders Bethlehem Moravian College, while Roseberry came from behind twice to earn a 2-2 draw with Retirement.
After 20 minutes of competitive football Dixon Hughes’ shot found the net to give Corby what turned out to be the winner. “I’m very happy, we are on top and we plan to stay there,” said Corby’s coach Craig Smith.
Bethlehem’s Marlon Hylton felt it was a “good game … It’s just unfortunate we came out on the losing side.”
Lindon Russell’s 20th-minute strike gave Retirement the lead against Roseberry, but Kirk Mullings put his team on level terms in the 35th min. Six minutes later Donovan Jackson put Retirement back in front, but in the 60th minute that was erased by Greg Morris to ensure his team’s share of the points.
