VCB headlines weekend’s Kansas Relays
LAWRENCE, Kansas (CMC) — Veronica Campbell-Brown has sent the organisers of the Kansas Relays into a frenzy, following her decision to contest the women’s 100 metres tomorrow.
The classy Jamaican sprint queen headlines a group of 15 Jamaican athletes that organisers have indicated will attend what is being described as the second-largest track and field meet in the United States with 5,521 competitors.
“A lot of times when Jamaicans do come, they go to the East Coast or the Penn Relays,” said meet director Milan Donley. “For them to come this far west is really exciting for us.”
“What we want to do is continue to grow off of this, and let them have a great experience and hope that next year they want to come back and add to it.”
He added: “It’s a matter of convincing them that you really need to come out and see what it’s like. We have a great meet.”
But getting the Jamaicans to attend the meet has not been easy.
Donley spent the last year trying to convince the agents for the Jamaicans that the Kansas Relays were worth a visit.
He also had to dispel the notion that the weather did not pose a great risk to a track meet at this time of year in a location like Kansas.
“It’s a domino effect,” said Donley. “Veronica’s agent called, and said, ‘I’ve got four or five athletes, and Veronica is one of them that’s interested in coming’.
“Then you get on the phone, and say, ‘Veronica Campbell-Brown is coming to town to run’. Sure enough, it generates a lot of interest.”
Campbell-Brown, a two-time Olympic 200m gold medallist, is set to contest her pet event and a 4×400 metres relay.
