Dawkins fires August Town to Bell KO trophy
Two early goals from former national striker Fabian Dawkins saw August Town to a 2-1 win over Cavalier for their first hold on the Claro/KSAFA Jackie Bell Knockout trophy at the Drewsland Mini-stadium on Saturday.
Dawkins opened the scoring 15 seconds into the match and added the other two minutes later, while Oneal Morrison netted Cavalier’s goal one minute before time.
Cavalier’s Michael Stone was shown the red card after the final whistle for violent conduct against former Waterhouse player, Rohan McDonald.
The relegation-troubled Digicel Premier League outfit went ahead immediately from a kick-off, which Dawkins finished off following a four-pass move from inside the area.
Two minutes later, the speedy forward found himself on the end of a cross to nod home his and August Town’s second of the game.
Cavalier lost their purpose for a while, but eventually came back into their own and gained control of the midfield, but found the August Town defence tough to crack.
The KSAFA Super League kingpins, who have not played a competitive game for over five weeks, looked match rusty and did not really threaten until the last two minutes of the half. In one instance, Locksley Thompson point-blank effort was well saved but Devon Haughton in August Town’s goal.
August Town started the second half the better looking team, but again Cavalier took control of the middle after 15 minutes in.
But despite pushing their opponents on the defensive, Cavalier only had a couple of half chances as the August Town defence kept them at bay.
Cavalier became more desperate as time ran out, but Morrison threw them a life-line with little over a minute to go, when he capitalised on a mistake from Haughton to fire home.
In the end, August Town carried off the Corporate Area’s top KO trophy and $350,000 in prize money.
Onandi Lowe was over-joyed after winning his first title at this level as coach.
“This is my first in the Premier League (as a coach) and I end up winning a trophy, so it’s a good feeling,” said the former national striker.
