Jamaican Borrego gives T-birds wings in ANZ Champs
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (CMC) — Sensational goal-shooting from Carla Borrego helped the Adelaide Thunderbirds notch the highest ANZ Championship total in history in a convincing 75-40 win over the Haier Pulse in fifth round on Saturday.
The Jamaican goal-shooter was unstoppable inside the semi-circle with 58 goals from 59 attempts, as the Thunderbirds made up for their slow start to the season with a devastating performance, which left the Pulse with few answers.
Thunderbirds got into gear quickly, building on their improving recent form to take a 20-11 lead at the first break, as they struggled to penetrate the circle in the face of quality defending from the visitors.
It was more of the same in the second period, when the Thunderbirds continued to move the ball smoothly up and down the court.
Rampant on attack, the mid-court pair of Natalie von Bertouch and Erin Bell provided a stream of quality balls to the shooters as the score continued to mount to hand Thunderbirds a healthy 38-23 lead.
Borrego stamped her authority under the hoop as she scored freely to lead her side into the last break 55-29 ahead.
Wholesale changes to both teams for the last quarter had no effect on the momentum with the Thunderbirds continuing to pound a Pulse team relieved to have heard the final whistle.
