Teams hunt quarters slots in Jamalco Open
MINERAL HEIGHTS, Clarendon — The quarter-final line-up for the Clarendon Netball Association/Jamalco Open League will be completed today at Mineral Heights Courts with Slipe PYC and Holmwood B best positioned to join Windalco, Jamalco, Mico and Optimist as automatic qualifiers.
Last Sunday in Zone Two, Slipe upset schoolgirl champions Holmwood ‘A’, 32-25, to go within three points of leaders Windalco (12) and are favoured to join them in the last eight with a win over lowly Hayes All-Stars (three) today.
Holmwood ‘A’ are also on nine points and could advance to the quarters as one of the two best third-placed teams, but face a mammoth task in defending champions Windalco.
In Zone Three, sister team Holmwood ‘B’ (nine) should have no such problem in securing their berth as they face winless Gravel Hill, while newcomers and zone leaders Mico (12) could make life difficult for Denbigh ‘A’ (nine) to join the party.
Despite Jamalco and Optimist on 12 points each, already taking the two automatic slots from Zone One, Denbigh ‘B’ or Glenmuir (with six points apiece) still have a mathematical chance of qualifying, but will have to win and hope that results in other zones go their way.
Glenmuir will play bottom-placed Humble Lion (zero), while Denbigh will collect three points from Mack Rebuilders, who withdrew.
In other games, it’s Jamalco vs Optimist, Foga Road vs Ricam and Toll Gate vs Longville Park. Action begins at 2:00 pm.
