Gayle takes slight dip after lean series
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (CMC) — Chris Gayle’s average form against South Africa in the recent one-day series has seen him drop one place in the ICC One-Day International batting rankings.
The left-hander scored a paltry 128 runs from five innings at an average of just 25, as his side slumped to a 5-0 whitewash to the Proteas for the third successive time.
Gayle is now sixth behind Australia’s Mike Hussey who jumped once spot to replace India’s Mahendra Singh Dhoni at the top of the rankings.
Ramnaresh Sarwan, who managed 44 runs from two innings before being ruled out the tour with injury, has also slipped one place to 28th.Veteran left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul has, however, remained ninth in the rankings after topping the scoring for his side with 157 runs at an average of 52, including two half-centuries.
In contrast, South Africa’s Hashim Amla has jumped eight places to number four in the rankings, after reeling off two centuries in amassing 402 runs in the series.
His captain Graeme Smith, who could only manage 119 runs, has dropped four places to 12th.
Medium pacer Dwayne Bravo is the highest placed West Indies player in the bowlers rankings at 21st but has dropped once place after taking eight wickets at an average of 32 against the Proteas.
Fast bowler Dale Steyn, meanwhile, has jumped three places to sixth place despite taking just four wickets from three matches.
New Zealand left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori remains at the top of the rankings.
