J’can boxers advance at CommGames

Athletes take to the track in Delhi

BOXERS Jovan Young and Phillip Bowes were off to a good start on yesterday’s opening day of men’s boxing at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.

Bowes scored a 5:1 points decision over Sri Lanka’s Indrajith Rajapaksha in the men’s light welterweight (64kg) division, while Young, who claimed a bronze medal at last summer’s Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Puerto Rico, stopped Fairus Mohd of the Christmas Island’s 6:3 in the middleweight category.

Bowes will next face another Christmas Islander, Khir Akyazcan, in tomorrow’s elimination round, while Young takes on Keira Harding of Wales on Friday.

Today, Reece Shagourie bows into the ring in the welterweight (69kg) division in a match against Zambia’s Godfrey Mumba.

Meanwhile, the Jamaicans have had mixed results in men’s team table tennis, first beating Caribbean rivals St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines 3-0 in Pool F action, while going down by a similar margin to Canada.

They play Malaysia in their next Pool F encoutner today.

In squash, men’s singles contender Bruce Burrowes was beaten by his Pakistan’s Danish Khan 0-3 (1-11, 5-11, 2-11) in the first round men’s singles, and later crashed 1-3 (11-0, 11-13, 1-11, 5-11) to Michael Rucklinger of Papua New Guinea.

Alia Atkinson was the only Jamaican to make it to the finals of any aquatics swimming events, finishing last in the final of the women’s 50-metres breaststroke swimming out of lane one, clocking 32.48 as Australia’s Leiston Pickett won in 30.84 seconds.

Atkinson had earlier clocked 32.24 seconds for third in heat two before finishing fourth in semi-final two, advancing to the final in a time of 32.13.

The national representative was earlier sixth of six competitors in the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:49.73 seconds and failed to advance past the first round

Victoria Ho also failed to advance past the first round of the women’s 200 freestyle, finishing eighth of eight competitors in 1:02.44.

It was a similar story for Alexia Royal-Eatmon, who posted 31.09 seconds for seventh in heat three of the 50m butterfly.

Royal-Eatmon also failed to qualify for the second round of the women’s 100 backstroke after clocking the 18th overall fastest time of the 25 competitors, posting 1:08.67 seconds.

All three swimmers will get another chance to make a final on Wednesday.

Royal-Eatmon lines up in lane seven of the 100m butterfly, while Ho competes in lane seven of heat one of the women’s 800m freestyle and Atkinson swims out of lane six of the women’s 200m breaststroke.

Meanwhile, events on the track and in the field begin today with eight Jamaicans in action.

Ramone McKenzie lines up in lane six of heat three of the men’s 100 metres, alongside the likes of Trinidad and Tobago’s Emmanuel Callender.

Oshane Bailey is down for action in the next heat, while Lerone Clarke takes the track in heat six.

Shanna Thomas and Yanique Booth line up in heats three and four, respectively, of the women’s equivalent Davita Prendergast takes to the track in the second heats of the women’s 400, while Dominique Blake is in heat three and Nadia Cunningham lines up in heat five.

National champion Dorian Scott is in the first flight of the men’s shot put qualification round.
