VCB heads shortlist for Walsh Award
TRACK and field legend Veronica Campbell-Brown heads a list of four individuals shortlisted by the selection committee for the Courtney Walsh Award for Excellence.
The others are Jomo Pitterson, International Master chess champion, Aleen Bailey, track athlete and David Summerbell Jnr, international motor racing champion.
The prestigious event, hosted by the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education Fund (CHASE), will take place in the Grande Jamaica Suite of the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Wednesday, October 20, 2010.
Prime Minister Bruce Golding, who will be the guest speaker at the event, will present the winner with the coveted crystal trophy and the J$500,000 cash prize.
“The wide range of nominations received this year, really speaks to the growing recognition of this Award. It is very clear that the Jamaican public views this award with respect, and one which they would like to see persons in the athletic and sporting arena, who have had illustrious careers, whether they are still active or retired,” said Dr Aggrey Irons, chairman of the selection committee.
Among the stringent criteria for the award is that: The Nominee must be a Jamaica national; must have had a history of outstanding achievements in his/her chosen field; must have shown a high commitment to fairness, teamwork and integrity in competitions; has displayed a high level of integrity, national pride, dedication, decorum, humility and discipline both on and off the field, and must have represented Jamaica at the senior level in a sport recognised by the Jamaica Institute of Sports, and the Jamaica Olympic Association.
Past winners of the award include cricketer James ‘Jimmy’ Adams in 2005; Olympic gold medallist and hurdler Deon Hemmings-McCatty in 2006; Netball champion Elaine Davis in 2007; cricketer Nehemiah Perry in 2008; and Brigitte Foster-Hylton, hurdler and 2009 IAAF World Championships 100-metre champion.
