Darren Bravo lifts Trinidad with classy ton
A classy unbeaten hundred from Darren Bravo propelled Trinidad & Tobago to a comfortable eight-wicket win over the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) in yesterday’s start of the 2010 West Indies Cricket Board regional one-day tournament at Kensington Park.
Chasing 201 for victory, Bravo reeled off shots all sections of the ground to take T&T home with six overs and five balls to spare. The left-hander struck five fours and half a dozen sixes off 121 balls in a well-paced knock of 104.
Captain Darren Ganga also finished unbeaten on 36 from 60 balls as his team reached 201 for two to ensure a positive start in their defence of the 50-overs title.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, the CCC struggled on a sluggish pitch and managed just 200 for eight of their allotted 50 overs. Their final score was mostly due to a solid 114-run third-wicket partnership between Floyd Reifer (99 runs) and captain Romel Currency (49 runs).
The left-handed Reifer had come to the wicket at 24 for two after openers William Perkins and Omar Phillips fell cheaply to spinner Samuel Badree and pacer Ravi Rampaul, respectively.
He proceeded to use the sweep shot effectively in cracking six fours and two sixes off 108 deliveries, while Currency hit two boundaries from the 104 balls he faced.
In search of quick runs late in the innings, Reifer, who was one short of a hundred, lofted Pollard straight to Dave Mohammed, who took a comfortable catch at long-off.
CCC also lost the wickets of Chadwick Walton (13), Nekoli Parris (1) and Gilford Moore (1) as the rest of the batting failed to build on the foundation set by the top-order.
Rampaul bowled with good control to finish with four for 36 runs off his 10 overs, while Kieron Pollard took two wickets in his lone over at the tail-end of the innings.
The Trinis’ chase started shakily when they lost Dwayne Bravo, caught by wicketkeeper Chadwick Walton off the bowling of Gilford with the score on 17.
Fellow opener Adrian Barath (41) then shared in a second-wicket stand of 59 with the younger Bravo before he pulled a short ball from Borris Hutchinson into the hands of Moore at deep midwicket.
That dismissal brought Ganga to the crease to share in an unbeaten stand of 125 with Bravo.
During the partnership, Ganga provided the perfect foil for Bravo, who was particularly aggressive against the slower bowlers. During the onslaught, left-hand spinner Kavesh Kantasingh was hoisted for three sixes in one over as Bravo rushed confidently to his century.
The competition will continue today when Barbados face the Leeward Islands at Sabina Park, while Guyana oppose the High Performance Centre team at Kensington. Both matches are scheduled to bowl off at 9:00 am.
