Windwards safely through after 2nd win
FLORENCE HALL, Trelawny — The Windward Islands are the surprise leaders of Group A of the West Indies Cricket Board Limited Overs President’s Cup after chalking up their second win yesterday with a three-wicket win over the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) at the Trelawny Multi-purpose stadium.
CCC won the toss and elected to bat first making 202 for nine off their 50 overs, while the Windwards eased to 203 for seven off 47.2 overs.
After their surprise win over hosts Jamaica via the Duckworth/Lewis method at the same venue last Thursday, the Windwards are now on eight points and certain for the semi-finals on Friday.
A century opening partnership of 105 between man-of-the-match Johnson Charles, who made 72 off 108 balls, and Devon Smith, who fell for 48, gave the Windwards the platform to overhaul the CCC total.
Charles, who was dropped on three occasions, twice by CCC’s captain Floyd Reifer, hit a six and four fours in his knock, while Smith hit three boundaries in his 76-ball stay at the wicket.
Windward Islands’ captain Darren Sammy, who got three wickets when CCC batted, made a quickfire 24 off 24 balls, while Andre Fletcher made 23 to steady the Windwards batting, as they suffered a mini collapse, losing four wickets at one stage for 21 runs.
Gifford Moore was the best bowler for CCC on the day, bagging four wickets for 41 runs off his 10 overs, while Kavesh Kantasingh, Ryan Austin and Nekoli Parris all took one wicket each.
Earlier, a rearguard action between Ryan Wiggins, who made 52, and a savage 37 off 17 balls from Jamaican Chadwick Walton carried the CCC to a respectable score.
Wiggins had a six and three fours in his half century, while Walton had three sixes and two fours in his short stay before he was caught on the boundary.
Romel Currency made 33 and Miles Bascombe made 28 against Sammy’s three for 34 off 10 overs and Shane Shillingford’s two for 36 off 10.
