Rain forces no result between HPC, Leewards

Rain continued to wreak havoc on the West Indies Cricket Board regional one day tournament as persistent afternoon showers forced a no-result in the crucial Group B match-up between the Sagicor High Performance Centre (HPC) and the Leeward Islands at Kensington Park yesterday.

When Jamaican umpire Vivian Johnson and his colleague Joel Wilson of Trinidad & Tobago called off play at 4:24 pm, the Sagicor HPC team had reached 21 for two chasing a victory target of 169 in a match reduced to 42 overs a side.

Earlier, the umpires had also paused proceedings for over an hour just six overs into the day because overnight rain hampered preparation of the playing surface.

The outcome means that both teams gained two points each to remain at the bottom of the group, after losing against Guyana and Barbados in their respective opening encounters. Barbados are top on nine points and are sure of a place in the semi-final, while Guyana lie second on four.

Batting first after being sent in, the Leewards recovered from the loss of opener Montcin Hodge (4) with a second wicket partnership of 55 between Javia Liburd (37) and Chesley Hughes (37).

While Liburd displayed immense restraint in his 100-ball knock, the left-handed Hughes was refreshingly positive against both pace and spin before he was caught in the deep by substitute fielder Brandon Bess off Nkrumah Bonner. By then he had hit a four and a solitary six off 54 deliveries.

The competition resumes today with Jamaica facing the Combined Campuses and Colleges at Kensington in group A, while Trinidad & Tobago will face surprise leaders Windward Islands. Jamaica need to win to have any chance of progressing ahead of T&T, while Windwards are already assured of a place in the semi-final.
