My Kingston — Paul Anthony Simpson
What’s your earliest memory of Kingston?
“Sammy the monkey” at Hope Gardens and Prep Champs at the National Stadium.
What would you do if you were mayor (of Kingston) for a day?
Visit inner-city public secondary schools, meet the principals, document the challenges and begin to establish partnership programmes with corporate institutions to expose these students to a wider array of opportunities. This may give them a competitive advantage to function in this global village. Also, initiate a JAMCLEAN campaign — this would begin with a deployment of approximately 30, 000 waste bins around the metropolis — and institute heavy penalties for littering starting at $50,000 if caught. To aid with this project, I would source funding to aid in the massive clean-up of downtown and the waterfront which are rich in heritage.
Share with us the title of the last book you read.
Hot, Flat and Crowded by Thomas L Friedman.
As a responsible corporate citizen, who not only has a financial commitment to our country Jamaica but also a social responsibility, I want to play a role in ensuring that Jamaica utilises its natural resources (sun, wind, hydro) in the most environmentally-friendly and cost-effective way. My future projections are that portfolios will do well if they consist of alternative energy investment instruments.
What’s your middle name?
PROVEN.
And the last bit of music that stirred your soul?
Beres Hammond (Putting up Resistance).
Which cologne are you currently splashing?
Déclaration by Cartier.
Share with us your last bit of retail therapy.
Two weeks ago, in South Florida, I visited Neiman Marcus, picked up a few Salvatore Ferragamo pieces (neck wear, pocket squares, cufflinks, belts, loafers etc).
What is your preferred beverage?
Christine Simpson’s (my mum) breadfruit juice, otherwise… Clynelish scotch on the rocks. This particular Scotch has hints of peat smoke and brine and is brewed in the highlands of Scotland.
What was your most memorable meal in Kingston?
Sonia’s home-style oxtail and fried chicken with steamed vegetables and green juice.
What are your current projects?
Working with my CEO (Christopher Williams) and the rest of the PROVEN team to open a branch in Montego Bay. Also working with a not-for-profit organisation to feed over 200 kids who do not have regular access to daily meals.
What upsets you?
Nothing upsets me now; but before, procrastination. I hate PROCRASTINATION!
What are your favourite spots on the island?
Maiden Cay, Rosehall’s White Witch and the Blue Lagoon in Portland.
Share some places in your Black Book.
Yates in England, Disneyland Paris in France, and the YM in Manhattan, New York.
Finally, what’s your philosophy?
This is summed up by the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, in Ozymandias: Nothing Is Forever, published in 1818… I recommend leaders to read this and ponder.
