Alleged fraudster remanded
THE operator of a Kingston-based investment company — who was recently arrested for two separate cases of fraud when he turned up at the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court for his trial on another fraud matter — was Tuesday remanded in custody.
Gerald Pusey, 40 — operator of Partners Financial and Investment Limited on Chelsea Avenue in Kingston — is accused of cheating a businessman out of $6 million which he got to invest and conning a business woman out of $102,000 after he rented her car.
In the first incident, it is alleged that between July 11, 2007 and January 11, 2008 the suspect collected a total of $6 million from the complainant, who lives in St Elizabeth.
Both reportedly had an agreement that the complainant would be paid a monthly interest of 10 per cent, however the suspect allegedly disappeared and refused to answer the complainant’s calls after he received the sum.
The complainant reported the matter in January of this year.
In the second incident, it is alleged that on October 9 of this year the suspect went to the complainant’s car rental company in Kingston and provided her with two cheques for a motor car that he was renting for one week.
However, when the complainant went to cash the cheques, she was told that the bank account from which the cheques were drawn did not have sufficient money. The crown told the court Wednesday that Pusey knew then that the bank account was empty.
The complainant reported the matter on December 10 and ten days later the accused was held by the police when he arrived at court.
Wednesday when the matter was mentioned, Pusey’s lawyer Terrence Ballentine countered the crown’s allegation stating that his client got the cheques from someone else.
The lawyer, who was prepared to make a bail application, told the court that he was deferring the bail application until next Tuesday.
Pusey, who is charged with obtaining money by fraud, was then remanded into custody.
