Mt Carey Baptist Church burnt to the ground
FIRE believed to be the work of arsonists destroyed the Mount Carey Baptist Church in St James this morning. Charles Hall, the moderator for the Mount Carey Baptist Circuit, said he received a call about 2:00 this morning, informing him that the church was on fire.
In recent times members of the church have been robbed by armed thugs. Their pastor, Reverend George Simpson, was shot and stabbed two years ago. This has fuelled suspicion among congregants with whom the Observer spoke, that the fire was set by arsonists.Related story:Three gunshots, four knife wounds
Hall said that by the time the fire brigade came the fire had spread so swiftly that the whole building was engulfed in flames.
This morning when news of the fire broke several members of the community converged on the building expressing shock.
Among the group of persons who visited the scene was councillor for the Cambridge Division Homer Davis who pledged support for any rebuilding effort.
