Gangster shot dead in Spanish Town drive-by
A member of Spanish Town’s notorious Klansman gang was yesterday shot dead in the St Catherine capital in what police believe is a feud among members of the criminal outfit.
The gangster, identified as Jermaine Morrison, alias ‘Speedy’, 31, was shot dead while at a service station at the corner of Young Street by men travelling in a motor car. A man and a woman were injured in the shooting, which sent scores of pedestrians scampering from the busy commercial area shortly after 2:00 pm.
Police said the injured persons were admitted to hospital in stable condition.
Head of the St Catherine North Police Division, Superintendent Anthony Castell, said Morrison’s death was the latest in a heated internal rift between members of the gang, believed to be one of the deadliest in the country.
“It is an internal or intra-gang rivalry between the members. Tesha Miller (reputed head of the gang) is now in jail so the others are fighting over who must control which turf,” said Castell.
For years, the Klansman gang has waged a bloody battle against the One Order gang, the other major criminal outfit operating out of Spanish Town. But yesterday Castell denied speculations that members of One Order had anything to do with the ongoing feud.
“Right now there is no war between them (Klansman) and members of One Order. They are fighting against themselves,” he said. “There is a continued, relentless pursuit of the gangsters by the police, and that is the reason why they are now fighting to control new turf. That is the reason they have shifted their operations to places like Portmore,” he added.
On Thursday night, gunmen sprayed bullets at a group of men playing dominoes in Portsmouth, Portmore, killing five of them. Police believe the attackers’ target was a man identified only as ‘Pazzam’, a member of the Klansman gang, who was among the dead.
Morrison was a suspect in that incident, Castell said, adding that his body will be identified in relation to the other incidents of shootings and homicides in that area.
A release from Karl Angell, director of communication for the Jamaica Constabulary Force, described Morrison as a senior member of the gang.
The release said the police were seeking two other Klansman members, Nevardo Hodges, otherwise called ‘Dee Jay’, and Rowell Jennings, alias ‘Jay Jay’ as persons of interest in his killing. “Both Hodges and Jennings frequent Hopeful Village, Lakes Pen and Quarry Hill in the Spanish Town area of St Catherine,” the release said. They are said to be armed and dangerous and should be approached with great caution.
Police said anyone with information about the whereabouts of the two are asked to contact Operation Kingfish at 811, Police Control at 119, or Crime Stop at 311.
