Giants advance – BT, Arnett, H’View into Bell KO semis
BOYS’ Town cruised into the semi-final of the Claro/KSAFA Jackie Bell Knock-out competition after slamming arch-rivals Santos 8-1 for a 9-2 aggregate win after the second leg at Collie Smith Oval yesterday.
The Red Brigade will be joined by Arnett Gardens, who played to a 0-0 draw with Greenwich Town, thus advancing 2-0 on aggregate.
Harbour View also booked their place in the last four after playing to a 2-2 tie with Tivoli Gardens at the Edward Seaga Complex. The ‘Stars of the East’ progressed to the next round on the away goal rule following their goalless draw in the first leg.
In the other quarter-final game yesterday, Waterhouse were virtually assured of their berths in the semis as at press time they led Police National 5-0 after 66 minutes at Drewsland mini-stadium.
At Collie Smith Oval, it took the home team 27 minutes to break the deadlock when Anthony Dawes scored. However, the Carlton Dennis-coached Santos drew level four minutes later when Richard West converted from the penalty spot.
Daemeon Benjamin restored the advantage for the home team from a free-kick three minutes later before Dean Thompson added another to make it 3-1 at the break.
Five minutes after the resumption, a defender turned in a strike from Xavian Virgo to put the hosts 4-1 up. Then, Jameel Hardware — who had earlier received an award for the most goals scored after the second round of the schoolboy Manning Cup at the ISSA Football Awards Ceremony — made it 5-1 in the 56th minute.
Ranae Lloyd added the sixth two minutes later; Shane Edwards scored in the 76th and goalkeeper Kirk Porter netted from the penalty spot in the 88th to seal the win for the Premier League title-chasers.
Boys’ Town coach Andrew Price said it was a professional display by his team.
“The key was the movement… we’ve been getting the movement, but we weren’t very clinical in front of goal and I believe we showed some finishing technique, and that is the type of technique I want,” he stated.
Dennis said his team played without heart and guts on the day.
“This was a poor performance and a poor result and this shows that we are spineless and gutless. We have no character; we went out and surrendered as after 25 minutes it was still 1-1 and we just fell apart,” he rued.
At the Seaga Complex, Ranique Muir gave the visiting Harbour View outfit the lead on the stroke of half-time and Andre Steele made it 2-0 10 minutes after the break.
However, Roland Dean pulled a goal back for Tivoli in the 70th and Christopher Jackson netted the equaliser five minutes from time, but Harbour View held on to advance on the away goal rule.
Boys’ Town will meet Harbour View in one semi-final, while Arnett Gardens will take on Waterhouse in the other game set for this Sunday at a venue to be announced.
