Westmoreland Major League back on track
SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland — The Captain’s Bakery & Grill Westmoreland Major League competition is back on track with its original format of 12 teams in two groups following a shaky start that resulted in a two-week delay between the launch on January 13 and the second match day on January 27.
Devon Maxwell, the Westmoreland FA’s assistant general secretary and competitions drector, noted that the problems facing five of the teams not present at the launch were resolved since the meeting with the teams on January 19.
Today, the second set of matches in Zone A will be completed when Roaring River entertain Sandals Whitehouse at Petersfield, Negril host Mt Grace and Westmoreand Police are at home to Race Course at Bay Road — all starting 3:00m.
On Monday, Shane Vanhorn’s four-timer for Paul Island sank Chantilly Forever 7-1 at Belle Isle to move into second spot in Zone B with four points following their 1-1 draw last week with Extra Flex, whose match on Monday with Petersfield at Little London High ended 2-2.
Savanna lead the group with six points after 4-2 wins over Chantilly Forever and Hertford on the respective match days.
In Zone A, Roaring River are ahead of Mt Grace by one goal, having beaten Westmoreland Police 4-1 last Thursday, and Race Course by two after the latter stopped Negril 2-1.
Mt Grace took the season’s opener 3-1 over Sandals and so are tied with other two teams on three points.
The teams are set to contest three rounds (home and away, then across zone); two End-of-Round finals; semi-finals over two legs among the top four teams on points at the end of round three, regardless of their original zone placing; and finals also over two legs for a total of 21 matches for the finalists. Match days for the four-monthlong tournament are Mondays and Thursdays.
