Renewed ‘Life’ for Clarendon football
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Guardian Life yesterday renewed its commitment to youth football in Clarendon by handing over a sponsorship cheque of $300,000 to the Clarendon Football Association (CFA) at their Mineral Heights headquarters.
The insurance company, who has been underwriting the cost of the parish’s Under-13 and Under-15 competitions since last year, will now partner with telecommunications provider Claro in this year’s sponsorship.
CFA president, Michael Ricketts, thanked Guardian Life for their continued support while lauding their decision to team up with Claro, the FA’s main sponsor.
“We are really happy to have Guardian Life and Claro partnering to boost our youth competitions… so on behalf of our youth committee I want to say a very special thank you,” Ricketts said,
The sum pledged represents an increase of $50,000 and Winsome Singh, Guardian Life’s regional branch manager, said her company was “delighted” to sign on with CFA for another year.
“Guardian Life enjoys looking after life,” Singh noted, “and what better way to do it than investing in youth and sports.
“Guardian Life recognises the importance of sports and we know that through football, in particular, our youngsters will develop good values, so we feel hounoured to be a part of this process,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Claro/Captain’s Bakery Major League continues today with Rock River hunting their first point when they host Free Town at Clarendon College.
Rock River placed third last season, but are yet to rediscover their winning formula as they languish at the bottom of the table following three consecutive defeats.
A date with promoted Free Town could, however, just be the game to break their jinx.
Free Town were beaten 3-1 in their opening game, but recovered with a stalemate and a win to move up to six in the standings on four points.
In the other game, Wood Hall could go joint top if they beat York Town in their game at the Office Oval in Turners.
Wood Hall currently occupy fourth on six points, but a victory over seventh-placed York Town (three points) would see them joining leaders Gimme-me-bit and Spartan Athletic on nine.
Tomorrow, Milk River play Spartan in a feature game of a double-header at Pass Side at 3:00 pm, while Gimme-me-bit and Original Hazard will square-off in the curtain raiser at 1:00 pm.
Matches start at 3:00 pm today.
