Squash tourney serves off next week
Twenty teams, including the defending champions, the Millsbourians, will contest the 10th Annual KPMG Squash League Tournament which will serve off Tuesday at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston.
The Tournament, which is one of the major highlights of the national squash calendar, will see 80 players in teams of four vying for top honours.
And with the competition’s unique handicap format, which evens the playing field between lower ranked players and top performers, practically every team has a genuine shot at the title.
Though defending champions the Millsbourians are among the favourites, they are expected to face stiff competition.
The team — which includes reigning All-Jamaica Under-15 and Under-17 girls’ champion, Mary Mahfood, and the Under-15 boys champion at the Philly Junior Silver Squash Championships in Pennsylvania Jake Mahfood — will have to fend off series challengers.
The Travoltas, led by current All-Jamaica Men’s Champion, Wayne Burrowes, are considered strong contenders for the championship. Similarly, the three teams from the University of Technology (UTECH), the Spartans, the Saints and the Knights are all expected to do well in the league.
In addition, the 2010 runners-up, the Milex Eagles — with10-time All Jamaica Ladies Champion, Karen Anderson — are looking to avenge last year’s loss.
Speaking at the tournament launch recently at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston, Patrick Chin, Partner at KPMG said: “KPMG is extremely happy to be part of this tournament for the 10th consecutive year. The quality of play is always high and this year will be no exception so we’re looking forward to some exciting matches and some hard fought competition.”
The competition, which will run for eight weeks, will be played at four Corporate Area locations — the Liguanea Club, the University of Technology, the University of the West Indies and the Constant Spring Golf Club.
