Necessary Luxury – Dr Herbert Thompson
Life is a game. It is to be enjoyed – abundantly. To play this game well some things are indispensable. My cap protects my head from the heat. I need a cool head in the swelter of the game; it shades my eyes and allows for clear vision, particularly in gruelling games. For speed and agility, my badminton racket is a sure companion. It facilitates a good physical workout. On the other hand, life sometimes changes gear to a slower pace and requires skill over wider fields. In this game my golf clubs are amazing. They facilitate relaxation and help me to maintain my sanity. Great game! Excellent lessons.
Golf magazines help me keep up with the sport; while my books keep me in shape intellectually. I must be on the cutting edge at Northern Caribbean University and in the wider academic community. Sometimes the luxury is a simpler fare: my table tennis racket. I enjoy it in a smaller setting, closer quarters in the duel, special serves, spins, loops, blocks, smashes, laughter, a genuine handshake, and sure pleasure. A game excellent for eye-hand coordination.
Then there is my first sport, tennis. There have moments of ecstasy and agony with my faithful racket in my hand.
My tennis shoes ensure that I keep moving in comfort in all these games. Life demands that, for the journey is often long and the road rough.
My iPad keeps the world at my fingertips; my Digicel BlackBerry Smartphone gets the work done wherever I am in the world. Finally, my Northern Caribbean University business card allows the universe of persons I know or need to know, knowing where to find me.
Life is a game: learn and follow the rules while you enjoy its necessary luxury.
