Bridgmohan lands feature at Gulfstream
HALLANDALE BEACH, Florida (CMC) — Jamaican jockey Shaun Bridgmohan captured the main feature at Gulfstream Park here Saturday when he steered Giant Oak to a handsome win in the US$500,000 Donn Handicap.
Going off at odds of 7-1, Bridgmohan sat the five-year-old chestnut horse off the pace in the 1-1/8 mile trip before bringing him with a late run to win by two lengths in one minute, 48.23 seconds.
The win was the first outright one for Giant Oak who has captured the Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs in November after Successful Dan was disqualified.
“(Giant Oak) showed the power we have expected,” said Bridgmohan, who flew in from his regular racetrack at Fair Grounds just for the race. “It was his power at the end. Those other horses didn’t back up.”
Bridgmohan kept Giant Oak in check early on as Square Eddie and Morning Line tussled for the lead through the first mile which was completed in 46.73 seconds.
The 31-year-old swung Giant Oak off the rails at the far turn before angling him to the outside of the leaders, in preparation for the stretch run.
Morning Line led briefly in the stretch but smooth acceleration saw Giant Oak take the lead inside the sixteenth pole and race to the finish virtually unchallenged.
Bridgmohan’s success was his second aboard Giant Oak.
