Young Boyz hold on for win against Haiti
Jamaica’s Under-17 footballer turned in a workman-like performance in beating Haiti 3-2 in their friendly encounter at the Ferdie Neita Park yesterday.
Goals by Javia Roberts (19th minute), captain Omar Holness (25th) and substitute Junior Flemmings (84th) pushed Jamaica to a deserved victory.
Johnley Chery and George Kerlins in the 56th and 74th minutes, respectively, replied for the Haitians.
Jamaica’s head coach Wendell Downswell was fairly satisfied with the team’s performance, though he thought his charges should have scored more goals.
“We should have won this game by at least two clear goals because we got some easy chances. Overall I think the exercise was a very good one for us,” he said.
Jamaica, in their final stages of preparation for the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship which they will host between February 14-27, went two goals up in the first 25 minutes and appeared to be cruising to victory.
“It wasn’t a major concern. Yea, disappointed that we gave up two soft goals, but we fought back and should have scored more goals,” said Downswell.
Roberts, who is at English Premier Lague club West Bromwich Albion, opened the scoring in the 19th minute for his first goal for Jamaica in his second game.
He combined well with fellow striker Jason Wright to break down the Haitian backline, but had to squeeze home on the third attempt after his first two efforts were blocked.
Captain Holness rammed home Jamaica’s second goal six minutes later from just inside the box.
Coach Downswell then decided to rest a few players and pulled top players Holness and Alvas Powell at the half-time break.
Haiti, who are drawn in Group A alongside Costa Rica and El Salvador, rallied to level the scores at 2-2.
Moments after Gedean Daniel missed a glorious chance to score for Haiti, Chery pulled one back with a beautiful bicycle kick before Kerlins stunned the home crowd to even the score.
But Jamaica College’s Junior Flemmings, who replaced Wright, got the winner after reacting quickest to a loose ball in the 18-yard box.
Jamaica will conclude their preparation with their final game against Costa Rica on Wednesday.
