Sunshine Girls to play T&T, England series
TRINIDAD & Tobago will travel to Jamaica for a two-game friendly series against the Sunshine Girls in late March as both continue their preparations for July’s World Netball Championships (WNC) in Singapore, Jamaica Netball Association (JNA) president Marva Bernard has told the Observer.
The matches against the number two-ranked Caribbean team will be played on March 25 and 27 at a venue to be decided.
Bernard said the choice of venue would depend on the financial resources of the JNA, with GC Foster College or the University of Technology (UTech) being the options if the cost of renting the National Indoor Sports Centre (NISC) proved prohibitive.
Meanwhile, England’s world number three-ranked netballers have confirmed they will travel to Jamaica for a three-Test series on April 26, 28, and 30.
The matches will be the last for the Jamaica team before they travel to Singapore. The final 12-member squad for the WNC will be selected following that series.
Bernard told the Observer an intended pre-WNC camp at the Australian Institute of Sport now seemed unlikely as the JNA was still well short of the funds needed to make the journey.
Technical director Jill McIntosh will arrive in the island on February 28 and will remain for 15 weeks to help the Girls in their preparation for the upcoming event.
The former Australia team coach and player was appointed advisor to the team late last year as part of the JNA’s plans to improve the stakes of the players at the World Championships.
“I can’t wait to get that show on the road,” Bernard said.
The senior netballers, who are currently on a break, will resume training next Monday.
