First-quarter fatalities drop
TRAFFIC fatalities for the first quarter 2011 have dropped by 11 over the same period last year.
Up to April 4 this year, 73 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes across the island.
According to data from the Transport Ministry’s Road Safety Unit (RSU), pedestrians, with 29 deaths, continue to lead the death count by category.
Private motor vehicle drivers, with 13 deaths, are second in the various categories of road users while motorcyclists follow with nine deaths.
Eight passengers in private motor vehicle were killed over the first-quarter period.
In spite of the first-quarter drop, the RSU projects that fatalities will increase this year by approximately two per cent.
