Benfica, Lion fight for DPL survival
WHILE Boys’ Town will continue to stalk Tivoli Gardens for the top slot in the Digicel Premier League (DPL), struggling Benfica and Humble Lion could be relegated this afternoon.
Tivoli Gardens, on 65 points, lead Boys’ Town by three points with three games remaining and cannot afford to slip further against fourth-placed Waterhouse, who are on 50 points.
Tivoli, who laboured to a 0-0 draw with Portmore United last Sunday, must place their feet back on the pedal to hold off the charging Red Brigade.
The Glendon ‘Admiral’ Bailey-coached Tivoli will be heartened by the fact that they have defeated Waterhouse in February and will be looking for a repeat performance today.
However, the West Kingston boys will be sweating on the fitness of star striker Navion Boyd, who seems to have aggravated an old shoulder injury.
Kaemmar Daley and Roland Dean will have to step up their games and lift their team, which lacked creativity and the will to win in their last encounter.
Second-placed Boys’ Town, on 62 points, have been playing attractive attacking football and are favoured to get the better of fifth-placed Portmore, on 48 points.
However, the Red Brigade will be without the inspirational Oneil Thompson in midfield as he picked up a red card against Village United.
But with likes of captain Michael Campbell, Anthony ‘Sausage’ Bennett, Jameil Hardware, Marvin Morgan, Renae Lloyd, Xavean Virgo, and Daemion Benjamin, Boys’ Town seemed to have the best all-round outfit.
St Ann-based Benfica, in their first season in the DPL, are rooted to the bottom on 37 points and if they lose to 10th-placed Reno on 41 points and ninth-placed St Georges, or even draw with Arnett Gardens, they will be relegated to Super league football next season.
With that in mind, Benfica will be throwing everything into their game against Reno at Frome and could therefore upset the home team.
Meanwhile, 11th-placed Humble Lion, on 37, will be looking for a favour from Clarendon neighbours Sporting Central Academy, on 46, in their effort to starve off relegation.
Both teams drew their three games this season and with Sporting safe from relegation, one would expect Humble Lion to emerge victors.
Ninth-placed St Georges are on 42 points. They know a win against eight-placed Arnett Gardens, on 44 points, at Lynch Park would guarantee survival.
Dethroned champions Harbour View, on 54, should consolidate third spot with a win over a Village United which is sixth spot on 43 points and lacking motivation.
