LYNCH PARK, PORTLAND — St George’s moved a step closer to securing their spot in the Digicel Premier League next season when they defeated Arnett Gardens 2-0 to move to 45 points — one ahead of their rivals — at Lynch Park on Wednesday.

Donovan Davis in the 39th minute and Girvon Brown in the 48th were the goalscorers.

St George’s started out on the attack through Richardo Watson, Delroy James and Romeo Parkes, with Arnett goalkeeper Damion Hyatt being called into action, diving to take a ball off Watson’s foot.

Arnett, however, countered through Kevin Wilson, Leon Strickland and Rohan Reid, with Kirk Ramsay and Newton Sterling lending support.

Watson was replaced by Donovan Davis and shortly thereafter was at the end of a Brown-Holmes combination just outside the penalty area, firing past a defender and beating Damion Hyatt in the 39th minute.

Arnett were denied the equaliser by goalkeeper Randal Huie when Wilson’s well-struck corner was tipped over the crossbar for another corner.

St George’s went on the attack in the second half through Girvon Brown, Dwayne Holmes, Donovan Davis and Romeo Parkes.

Brown, whose shot was initially blocked by a defender, regained possession inside the area and beat both defenders and the goalkeeper in the 48th for a 2-0 lead.

Geoffrey Maxwell was pleased with the result: “We played in patches and with a game plan.. We were a bit tense… (but) it was a better performance and I’m satisfied,” he said.

Losig coach Paul “Tegat” Davis was disappointed: “We’re in the bottom six and everyone is fighting against relegation. I’m disappointed in my team… we won a nice game on Sunday and came here and played too relaxed,” he said.
