BT, Tivoli gear for Flow clash Sunday
THE semi-finals of the Flow Champions Cup All-Island Knock-out football competition are upon us, and for the last four remaining teams, the $1 million horizon to the top-prize is now in clear sight, as the nation’s best quartet get set to lock horns for top honours in an Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex double-header on Sunday.
Three Premier League teams, including the leaders, as well as the defending champions, plus a first-time entrant, form the cast for what is expected to be a fiery penultimate round in the nation’s top KO competition.
Two-time defending champions Boys’ Town are primed for a ‘three-peat’ and have been building up a steady head of steam from their previous assignments.
But things will not get any easier for the Trench Town-based Red Brigade, who must find a way around one of the best teams in the country if they are to join Harbour View as the second most successful team in the competition, with a third lien on the title.
Portmore United, with four KO titles (including their days competing as Hazard United) hold the record for the most wins in the competition.
Boys’ Town are currently engaged in an enthralling battle with Tivoli Gardens for league spoils and after getting the better of Humble Lion and Arnett Gardens in their previous games.
The knock-out kingpins will have to get through the west Kingston-based outfit if they are to ensure that the trophy remains in their cabinet at Collie Smith Drive.
Tivoli Gardens are, however, also determined to hoist the title for a third time and must be in a good mood following impressive wins over Harbour View and Frazsiers Whip in their two matches so far in the campaign.
Some may argue that this is certainly a contest which more befits a final, and it would be a very good argument indeed, as both teams share four titles between them.
The encounter is also a repeat of the 2009 final, which was won by Boys’ Town by a 3-0 margin.
For Sandals Whitehouse, getting to the final of a competition with the prestige of the Flow Champions Cup is a mark of the hard work of the part-time footballers/full-time employees of the luxury hotel chain.
Head coach Aaron Lawrence, a man quite acquainted with the pressures of high-level competition, having represented Jamaica at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, will be hoping to provide the inspiration for his Cinderella team, which has already surpassed the expectations of most pundits.
St Georges SC lay in waiting; certainly not an insurmountable task for the Westmoreland parish champions, but in truth, the Premier League campaigners will be equally pleased with their draw and will certainly start as considerable favourites, despite their struggles in the league.
St Georges have never been to a knock-out final and the Portlanders will be hoping that a maiden entry into the ‘Big Show’ will provide a much-needed catalyst for their league survival efforts.
The St Georges-Sandals Whitehouse match-up will raise the curtains at 3:00 pm, before Boys’ Town and Tivoli Gardens square-off in the 6:00 pm feature.
