All set for Trelawny yam festival
MONTEGO BAY, St James – ORGANISERS say all is set for the Trelawny Yam Festival, organised by the Southern Trelawny Environmental Agency (STEA), in Albert Town, Trelawny on Easter Monday.
“We are as prepared as we can be. We are doing the fine tuning and detailing right now for a smooth execution of activities come Easter Monday,” Hugh Dixon, chairman of STEA, told the Observer West yesterday.
After being away since 2008, the 2011 Trelawny Yam Festival is returning to its original home in Albert Town with telecommunications giant, Digicel, onboard as title sponsor.
The premier food festival — which has inspired several other festivals islandwide, and which showcases a variety of cuisine produced from yam — was first staged in Albert Town in 1997.
But much to the displeasure of many in south Trelawny, it was relocated to the Hague Agricultural Show Ground in north Trelawny in 2008. The show took place at Hague for two years in a row.
Dixon said south Trelawny residents, the leading producers of yam in Jamaica are very excited that the festival has returned home and are very supportive of the event.
